Are you anxious about federal battery rebates as a homeowner, installer or a retailer? You don’t need to wait any longer for official details since The Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment, and Water has released the key points you need to know. This is categorised under the Cheaper Home Batteries program, which will benefit people with $2.3 billion in incentives. It will act as a relief to the cost of battery installation effective from 1 July 2025.
Before we delve into the details, let us take a look at what the cheaper home batteries program is.
An Overview of the Cheaper Home Batteries Program
The Cheaper Home Batteries program is developed to support households and small businesses with the cost of installing small batteries to an existing or new solar system.
The program can effectively:-
- Reduce the costs associated with installing a new battery for eligible households and small businesses.
- Reduce electricity costs for all Australians, whether they install a battery to the existing system or choose to avoid it.
Small-scale batteries help reduce emissions and strengthen the overall electricity infrastructure.
Let us now delve into the details of the federal battery rebates.
Federal Battery Rebate – Official Information
If you are an eligible Australian, you can receive a 30% discount on the upfront cost of installing a home battery system effective from 1 July 2025. The discount is considered a part of the Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs) through the Clean Energy Regulator. It can be further categorised under the expanded Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES).
How Do the STCs Work?
If you have an eligible battery system, you will receive:
- 3 STCs per kWh of usable capacity (in 2025)
- They are capped at 50kWh of usable capacity
- The valuation is around $372 per kWh, which comes to approximately around $40 per STC
So, if you have a 10kWh system, for instance, you will be eligible to receive approximately $3,720 as a discount in 2025. However, the program will wrap up in 2030, and the number of STCs, and their value, will also decrease each year. So, if you have a 10kWh system, for instance, in 2030, you will receive a discount of up to $1,880. Thus, the sooner you take advantage of the scheme, the greater the discount you will get.
Eligibility Criteria
Below are the eligibility criteria for the federal battery rebate.
Your battery system should:-
- Be between 5kWh and 100kWh
- Be installed on or after 1 July 2025
- Be installed with existing or new solar panel
- Comply with AS/NZS 5139:2019 and the Best Practice Guide: Battery Storage Equipment
- Be installed by SAA-accredited installers and need to be supervised by them
- Be listed on the Clean Energy Council (CEC) approved product list
As a consumer, you should also have written statements related to installation safety with expected energy savings. Additionally, you need to have compliance documents that meet state regulations.
A Few More Important Points Regarding the Rebate Program
These are a few more additional points that you need to know regarding the federal battery rebates.
- You can opt for a rebate for only one battery on your premises under the program
- The batteries should be VPP-capable if installed on grid
- Off-grid systems are eligible too, without VPP capability
