Australia has of late witnessed an unforeseen upsurge of household solar storage installations, surpassing the previous expectations and signalling a turning point in Australia’s journey to attain green and cost-effective energy.

On 1st July 25, Australia started Cheaper Home Batteries Program, which offers a federal rebate, which amounts up to a discount of around 30% on all eligible home battery systems. This AU$2.3 billion worth scheme is designed to boost adoption of solar storage by making the solar systems less expensive and more accessible to common households, startups, small businesses, and the solar panel community groups. The rebate is capped at AU$372 per usable kilowatt-hour, wherein a typical 10kWh battery receives more or less AU$3,300.

This ‘Cheaper Home Batteries’ rebate has opened the floodgate of solar home battery installation, with the first 6 weeks witnessing a thumping 28.000 homes across Australia having installed these batteries. This is equivalent to the number of homes seeing installation of these batteries in the entire first half of 2024.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese recently visited an installation site in Brisbane, describing this phenomenon as ‘astonishing’. He noted that the average capacity of storage in these new systems have reached the tune of 491 megawatt-hours.

What’s the Policy?

The ‘Cheaper Home Batteries’ program was launched just a few weeks before the Federal Elections, and was worth AU$2.3 billion. One of the objectives of the program was to reduce the upfront cost of battery installation by around 30%. The batteries are delivered through the SRES or Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme, which Australian households have widely used to adopt rooftop solar panels.

Recent studies have indicated that more than 19,000 systems were registered in the first month following the launch of the scheme, and within the two following weeks, that number quickly reached almost 10,000 more!

Chris Bowen, the Federal Energy & Climate Minister hailed this massive response as a solid proof that Australians are responding positively to the good government policies. He highlighted the collective commitment of the Australian to achieve zero-goals, household savings, as well as grid resilience.

As per research conducted by various clean-energy advocacy groups, installation of home batteries alongside electric appliances can deliver about AU$ 1,000 in terms of annual savings for solar-equipped households.
